Gel X vs Acrylic vs Dip: Which One Is Right for You?
You sit down, the tech asks "gel, acrylic, or dip?" and you say whatever you got last time. Most people do. But the right answer depends on your nails, your schedule, and how hard you are on your hands. Here is the plain version of each one, what it costs you in time and upkeep, and who it is actually for.
Gel X: soft gel tips for length without the damage
Gel X is a full set of pre shaped soft gel tips. We prep your natural nail, apply a thin gel base, then press on a tip that already has the length and shape built in. Everything cures under an LED lamp, then we finish with gel color on top.
What it feels like: Light and flexible, closer to your natural nail than acrylic. No strong smell, no filing dust in the air.
How long it lasts: 3 to 4 weeks for most people. Because the tips are one piece, they do not get "filled." When your grow out shows, we soak off the set and apply a fresh one.
Removal: Soaks off with acetone in about 15 to 20 minutes. No drilling the product off.
Best for: People who want length and a clean, uniform shape, want to keep their natural nails healthy underneath, and are fine with a new full set every visit instead of fills.
Not ideal for: Anyone who needs their nails to survive heavy hands on work. Soft gel bends, and under enough force a tip can pop.
Acrylic: the strongest option, built by hand
Acrylic is a liquid monomer mixed with a powder polymer, sculpted onto your nail or over a tip, and it hardens on its own in the air. It is the original enhancement and still the toughest one available.
What it feels like: Solid and rigid. You will notice them for the first day or two, then they become part of you.
How long it lasts: Indefinitely with fills. You come in every 2 to 3 weeks, we file down the grown out area, and fill in new product at the cuticle. A well maintained acrylic set can go for months.
Removal: Soak off in acetone, usually 20 to 30 minutes, with some gentle filing to thin the product first.
Best for: Long or dramatic shapes like stiletto and coffin, people who are rough on their hands, anyone who wants a set that will not bend or lift under pressure.
Not ideal for: People sensitive to the smell of monomer, or anyone who wants a thinner, more natural look. Acrylic is also the least forgiving if you skip fills. Grow out creates a lever point and that is where breaks happen.
Dip powder: gel look, no lamp, strong wear
Dip starts with a bonding base coat, then your nail is dipped into colored powder. Repeat two or three times, seal with an activator and top coat, and it hardens without a lamp. Dip can be done on your natural nail or over a tip for length.
What it feels like: Thicker than gel polish, thinner than acrylic. Very hard surface, resists chips well.
How long it lasts: 3 to 4 weeks, sometimes longer. Like Gel X, dip is not usually filled. Most people do a fresh set each visit.
Removal: This is the part people underestimate. Dip is dense, so removal takes 20 to 30 minutes of soaking plus filing. Never peel it off. That is how natural nails get thin.
Best for: People who want strength on their natural nail without adding a lot of length, and anyone who wants color that will not chip for a month.
Not ideal for: People who change color often. Dip is a commitment, and removal is the longest of the three.
